Yakitori

Most foreigners to Japan love these skewers, as they are similar to barbecue. It has familiar tastes, but is different from regular barbecue on a skewer or stick. Early on, Yakitori was mainly chicken, as “tori” in Yakitori means “bird”. But recent years have it served using fish, pork, or beef. Maybe to suit the tastes of Westerners. Whatever the reason, it has become more interesting as there are a variety of flavors and spices, though the most popular is a combination of meat and vegetables grilled on a skewer served with teriyaki sauce. This is the one most foreigners opt for. If you are not sure of what to try in Japan, this is probably the best first dish to try. Good with beer, or as a meal with rice or noodles.
