Just like the gyoza, takoyaki is a common Japanese street-food delicacy. It can be found all over. These are called “octopus dumplings” by most foreigners. It is not as hideous as it sounds, and is quite delectable. This food is cooked using a special hot-plate with rows of half-spherical moulds. Each is filled with a savory batter mixture before a bite-sized piece of “tako” octopus meat is inserted in the middle. They are turned every minute to cook evenly. They are normally served in groups of 6, 8, or 10, and are brushed with a sweet-savory takoyaki sauce, topped with mayo, bonito flakes, and aonori seaweed. Really great tasting street-food.
