Vank Church

It may come as quite a surprise to find a Christian church in the middle of a country that is mostly Islamic, but that is exactly what the Vank Church is. ‘Vank’ actually means monastery in Armenian, and it was built all the way back in 1606 when a number of Armenians found themselves displaced due to the Ottoman War and needed to find a new place of residence. The church is much like that of many other ancient churches, ‘adorned with thousands of frescoes, gilded carvings, and intricate tile work.’ Of course time has managed to change portions of the structure, more so outside, but the inside is still a mesmerizing feat of architecture and design.
