Ranked #5: Washington

Mother Jones

Don’t get us wrong, Washington state is gorgeous with its mountain ranges, parks, oceans, lakes, rivers, and all its hiking trails. But it is also one of the most expensive states to live in too. For all its glory, a home in the city of Seattle can go for as much as $528,800 on average. Even though Washington has no income tax of their own, residents have to watch out for higher property and sales taxes. Plus the rain can be a damper for anyone that prefers the more sunny, gorgeous weather found in California, for example. Dyonysos Larson wrote on Quora, “From November to February the sun actually never comes up. Not literally, but sunrise is around 8 a.m. and sunset is before 5 p.m., and it’s constantly cloudy, so it just feels like perpetual night for three or four months.”
