The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, 1982

Hundreds of people flocking to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial which opened in 1982. Designed by Maya Lin, a 21-year old undergraduate of Yale University who won a national design contest, the “Wall,” as it is fondly called, is made of two parts of black granite almost 500 feet long combined, and lists the names of about 58,000 veterans who died in Vietnam. The Washington, D.C. memorial is visited by millions of people each year, and even has a half-scale replica that travels around the country.
