Forgetting about the sunscreen

These days, people know better than to expose themselves to the sun’s cancer-causing, wrinkle-and-sun-damage-inducing harmful UVA and UVB rays. Our awareness is such that we even have a manifesto, in the form of song, “Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)” by filmmaker, writer, and producer, Baz Luhrmann. “Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of ’99, wear sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it,” the opening lines admonish. And, the sensible ones among us take heed. But, in the 1960s, people not only forgot their sunscreen, they willfully ditched it. The 60s gave rise to a generation of sun worshippers who weren’t afraid of a little sunburn—or of a little skin cancer and premature aging, it would seem. Of course, those very same people are now likely grabbing up every anti-aging skin care product they can get their hands on.
