Manufactured by American Merri-Lei Corporation of Brooklyn N.Y., the contraption was introduced to the public in 1959 as the “Man-from-Mars Radio Hat.” The head gear, invented by Merri-Lei’s founder, Victor Hoeflich, featured a portable radio built into a pith helmet, and boasted the ability to broadcast radio stations from within a radius of 20 miles. The hat went into limited production shortly after its launch to the public, until the early 50s.
