The booze culture was strong the 1960s, thanks, in part, to the spirit of the wild 60s child, but also in part to pop-culture crazes. Helen Gurley Brown’s book, “Sex and the Single Girl,” which came out in 1962, pushed a crash diet of eggs, steak, and wine—which was to be imbibed at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Cocktails were especially all the rage, with men and women, and were consumed not only in social settings, but also at home, and even at the workplace. Alcoholism was a skeleton in many closets, and dangerous acts like drunk driving were often commonplace, back in the day (at least, until drunk driving laws were passed in the 1970s).
