This is definitely NOT a pro-tip you’d find in Dr. Spock’s bestselling “The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care,” published in 1946—but expectant moms did it anyway. Then again, back in the 50s and 60s, moms-to-be were largely unaware of the many risks associated with smoking during pregnancy. Preterm birth, birth defects involving the mouth and lip, low birth weight, and even an increased risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) are just some ill-effects that cigarette smoking while with child can have on the unborn baby. Not to mention, the array of health hazards attached to smoking, for the mother herself. Of course, now that we know all of that, most expectant mothers these days steer clear of smoking, whether firsthand or from inhaling second hand smoke. And all developing fetuses said: Hurray!
