A number of toys from the 1960s that were meant to help children develop their potential and skills turned out to be huge safety hazards. The Creepy Crawlers toy oven, for instance, with its molds of spiders and other insects, was meant specifically to encourage boys to take on baking; why should little girls have all the fun, after all? But the oven overheated to unsafe temperatures and proved to be a burn hazard. Plus, the liquid plastic used for the molds turned out to be made of toxic materials.
