In the 1950s and 1960s, it was virtually unheard of to don a helmet before getting on a bicycle. Even professional bike races, back then, did not require contestants to wear protective headgear. While many states have since enacted some form of law requiring a helmet while bicycling, the rule applies to the under-18 age group. On the federal level, there is still no helmet law for bicycling in the United States. But, helmetless bike riding, while not illegal, is most certainly frowned upon. “Safety first” is a great motto, one which most bicycle riders take upon themselves to observe.
