Are your kids playing outdoors suddenly thirsty? No problem! Give them a long, cool drink of water from the garden hose! At least, that’s what parents in the 1950s and 1960s would do. Bottled water wasn’t a thing, back then, and the water canteen wasn’t always handy; garden hose, to the rescue! The problem was that people did not realize that the quality of outdoor ground water was not as good as the water that flowed through indoor pipes. Outdoor water was often contaminated and contained unsafe levels of lead. Plus, the metal nozzle of the garden hose was likely to leach lead.
