Allowing your child to ride shotgun

In the US today, child passenger safety laws are in place and enforced, and have been, for a number of years. But, apparently not until the 1970s. Prior to the 70s, which saw the arrival of car seat regulations, moms and dads thought nothing of allowing their child/children to ride up front with them—no car seat, and, often, no seat belt. Whichever parent was behind the wheel would simply use their arm as a protective barricade, stretching it out across the child’s chest in the event that they had to hit the brakes suddenly. Yikes.
