Believe it or not, in the 1950s, there were schools in Wisconsin that regularly gave their students “goiter pills.” Back then, many people had been developing thyroid problems, presumably due to low to a lack of iodine consumption. Worried that their students would suffer the same fate, schools in Middleton and Milwaukee, among others, would pass out chocolate-flavored Warner’s Renowned Goiter Medicine to its students. The school kids had to pop the iodine pills once a week, whether they had goiter trouble or not. Imagine doing that today? Parents would slap lawsuits quicker than the school could say “goiter, goiter, go away!”
