As mentioned earlier the original Darrin actor, Dick York, had to be replaced. He was suffering from back problems and the pain was so bad for him that he actually became addicted to painkillers. He had to leave and the producers were left with a conundrum. They needed to find a replacement but they weren’t sure if the viewers would fall in love with the new Dick Sargent. Would they clamor for York to return? They needed to make sure that fans would be fine with it before the new actor appeared on screen. So, ABC reran every episode in which York did not appear which made the transition a whole lot easier for them.
