Saddam Hussein ruled Iraq for over two decades, but when he was removed from power in April 2003 and later arrested in December, there were huge celebrations all over the country. More than 15 years later, with Iraq being led by the very people Saddam once tried to suppress, it’s almost impossible to find any depictions of the former president. Since the current leaders are not keen on preserving Saddam’s legacy, all things representing him have been destroyed, including his giant portraits and statues. Most of his posters have been plastered over with portraits of Ali who is regarded by Shia Muslims as the divine successor to the Prophet Muhammad. However, you might be surprised when you talk with some older Iraqis who lived under his brutal dictatorial regime because they openly admit that they miss the time he was in power, saying the country was safer then, there were no suicide bombers, and women had more freedom than they do today. In fact, many Iraqis believe that even though Saddam was a horrible person, what he did was nothing compared to the terrible things the country is going through now.
