Don’t Dress Inappropriately

Iraq is more tolerant when it comes to dress code compared to its neighboring Muslim countries, namely Saudi Arabia, Iran, Turkey, Oman, and Jordan. However, it’s still advisable to dress modestly and not wear anything too revealing. While women don’t have to wear veils or headscarves, you should bring one when you’re visiting a religious site. You also need to take off your shoes before stepping inside a temple or mosque. Iraqi fashion is varied, with a mix of Western and Eastern influences on street fashion, but most rural Iraqis still wear traditional clothing. Women conventionally wear a veil which they only remove at home or when they’re among women. They also wear a brightly colored dress, but this is hidden underneath an abaya, a dark loose cloak that covers their body from head to ankle. Women wore more conservative clothing when security was poor because the militia did not want women showing any skin and tempting men. Otherwise, they risked getting kidnapped or worse, killed.
