Even though Iraq is recognized as a predominantly Muslim nation, with over 95% of the population practicing Islam, the country also has some of the least religious people in the Middle East. Christianity, Yazidism, Mandaeism, Shabakism, Yarsanism, and Zoroastrianism account for the remaining five percent, and while there used to be a Jewish community, they no longer exist in Iraq. The Kurds are primarily Sunni Muslims, but they are not as religious as the Muslims outside Iraqi Kurdistan. The Kurds attribute their lack of faith to Saddam Hussein. When the dictator invaded Kurdistan and committed the most brutal atrocities, he did so in the name of God. After what they went through during the rule of the cruel tyrant, many Kurds lost their faith in Islam and stopped observing Islamic practices.
