Even though the terrible things you hear on the news happening in Arab Iraq don’t happen in Kurdistan, the region is still very turbulent. The last terrorist attack in Erbil was in 2014 and though this happened over half a decade ago, the area is still highly unstable, and the peaceful situation can change overnight. Still, don’t let fear and anxiety stop you from hitchhiking around this autonomous region, visiting refugee camps, and meeting amazing people with remarkable stories to tell. Effective military operations have done a good job defending the region’s borders, and you will find many checkpoints controlled by Kurdish military forces known as Peshmerga. The Peshmerga don’t give Western passport holders a difficult time, but Iraqis traveling from Baghdad are often held and interrogated because they don’t trust Arabs who could potentially be ISIS spies.
