If you are decided to go to Iraq even though the U.S. Department of State strongly discourages travelers from visiting the Middle Eastern country, make sure you have a contingency plan in case you do encounter any form of armed conflict or terrorism. Coordinate with your family, employer, or organization or consult with a professional security company to set up your own personal security plan. Also, register an account with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive alerts and make it possible to locate you in case you find yourself in the middle of a violent riot, or worse, kidnapped, or any other emergency. Make sure to follow the Department of State on social media and carefully read the crime and safety reports for Iraq. If you absolutely must go to Iraq because you want to experience the culture firsthand, make sure you go over the traveler’s checklist for high-risk areas.
