There are countless checkpoints in Iraqi Kurdistan, around Baghdad, and the holy cities of Karbala, Kufa, Najaf, and Samarra, with some only hundreds of meters from each other. While you’re waiting to get through the checkpoints while your guide shows your paperwork and makes a few phone calls to gain entry to a site, don’t even think about taking a selfie at the checkpoint or snapping a photo of the armed soldiers. The country is pretty laidback when it comes to taking pictures of its beautiful landscape and many attractions, but do not take photos of Iraqi soldiers, the Peshmerga, and checkpoints. Most non-military locals would be happy to have their pictures taken, especially the warm and friendly Kurds, and would even welcome selfies with tourists, but stop yourself from taking a selfie with a trooper. Also, don’t take photos of government structures and the holy shrines located in Karbala, Kufa, and Najaf.
