The Muslim holy month of Ramadan shouldn’t prevent you from traveling to Iraq. If you’re worried about needing to eat at certain hours during the day, say you’re on medication that should not be taken on an empty stomach, you won’t be prohibited from bringing and consuming water and food while exploring the city. You can buy snacks and local delicacies from stores in the evening that can last till the next day in case you can’t find any food in the town you’re visiting. However, be sensitive to Iraqis observing Ramadan. It’s smart to bring a bottle of water and food with you but be very discreet when you take a sip of your drink or a bite of your food. Don’t eat in public especially when you’re with Muslims who have not taken any food or water for several hours. If you have no way to avoid eating around them, at least apologize and ask to be excused. Also, keep a respectful distance and don’t be noisy when they are praying.
