Getting a travel visa to Iraq is very complicated and time-consuming. First, you need to complete an application form, submit recent photos and IDs, a passport that is valid for at least six months from the date of application, and a colored photocopy of your passport. You’ll also need a local contact to help you apply at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Baghdad where you’ll send an official letter indicating your purpose of travel, length of stay, plus an invitation from Iraqi authorities or the hosting company or meeting organizers in Iraq. Once your application is approved, you will receive a letter permitting you to personally apply at the Embassy of Iraq in your country of residence. Once this application is approved, you will be issued either a single-entry visa that’s valid for three months or a multiple-entry visa that’s valid for six months to a year. Expect the entire process to take four to eight weeks and to cost between $50 and $150 paid only in cash. Some Western nationalities, including Americans, British, Canadians, and Australians, are issued a free 30-day visa on arrival at the airport, but other countries need to go through the tedious process.
