Contrary to what most people think, it’s perfectly legal to drink alcohol in Iraq. The Middle Eastern country even produces its own beer and vodka. Iraqis have arak, also spelled araq, a translucent white anise-flavored distilled spirit that is extremely potent at 40% to 63% ABV (alcohol by volume). The traditional alcoholic drink, served by mixing one part arak to two parts water and poured into cups of ice, is available in stores of main cities and also in bars and international hotels. However, if you’re on a budget, buy beer and liquor from supermarkets and not in bars, especially bars in hotels. A bottle of beer doesn’t cost more than a dollar in local groceries, but bars and hotels will charge you ten times the store price. Furthermore, Iraq was one of the countries that had comprehensive prohibitions against alcohol and proposed to ban the manufacture, sale, and consumption of alcohol in 2016. While this proposal was dropped in 2017, a 200% tax on alcohol was introduced in 2018.
