Fergie Olver was a Canadian game show host and sportscaster. He was a well-known sportscaster, since from the 1980s until the early 1990s he was the dugout reporter for the Toronto Blue Jays and he reported on their games on TSN, BBS and CTV. Olver however was infamous, for co-hosting the 1980s children’s game show “Just Like Mom” on Canadian television. Catherine Swing, Olver’s wife, co-hosted the show with him. The show had children and their mothers as contestants. Each parent and child pair then had to prove that they know each other the best by going through some question and answer sessions. After which, the mothers had to eat “bake-off” items, the mothers then had to guess which “baked” item their child made. Dealing with the host, Fergie Olver, was another challenge.
In the 2000s, clips of the show started circulating on YouTube, and people got to watch how distasteful Olver was on the show. The off-putting part of the show was specifically his habit of kissing little girls on the show. Olver would often ask for a kiss, regardless if the girl agreed or not, Olver would still proceed to give a one. Most of the girls are between the ages of 6 to 12 years old, and a lot of them clearly did not want to be touched. But it did not matter to Olver, since he kept doing it anyway. Maclean’s magazine was able to discuss the issue, they pointed out that audiences of that time most probably did not notice how “creepy” Olver’s acts were. In hindsight, watching Olver’s antics now is uneasy to watch.
