Pat Sajak is a Stickler with Pronunciations

While hosting the game show “Wheel of Fortune” back in January 2010, Pat Sajak showed that he is a stickler when it comes to proper pronunciations. The episode can be considered as one of the most memorable moments of the show. The answer to the puzzle was clearly “Regis Philbin & Kelly Ripa”, and the first contestant knew the answer; he however did not know how to pronounce Regis’ last name. He instead answered with “Regis Philburn”. However, “almost correct” does not count, and the answer was not accepted. The second contestant goes bankrupt, and then the third contestant buys additional letters and almost completes the puzzle. The third contestant seems to know the correct answer, but he can’t pronounce Kelly’s last name, and he answers with “Regis Philbin and Kelly Reepa.” That is of course wrong! The next guy takes his turn, but he doesn’t bother to spin, but also gave the wrong answer with “Regis Philmin”. The next contestant gets their turn, this contestant spins and gets to fill every remaining consonant and exposes the entire puzzle. But this contestant still mispronounces Kelly’s last name and pronounces it as “Ripe-a”. Finally, the succeeding contestant solves the puzzle by properly pronouncing everything correctly.
Clearly, if Pat Sajak is the host for shows like “Wheel of Fortune”, pronunciation is key!
