Richard Dawson was born on November 20, 1932 as Colin Lionel Emm. He was a British-American actor, game show host, panelist and comedian in the United States. Dawson was the original host of “Family Feud” from 1976 to 1985 and he hosted the show again from 1994 to 1995. The “Family Feud” has been around for more than 40 years. Every five years or so, the show would introduce a new host. With each host bringing in a different energy and personality to the beloved show. But no one can beat Richard Dawson, the original host. Dawson would occasionally ridicule and make fun of the contestants. Which is still a part of “Family Feud” in the past 40 years. Dawson had a habit of kissing almost every single woman who was on the show, which would not be considered acceptable these days. He in fact actually used the term “smarmy” to describe himself during an interview with People. Despite all of that, he was found by many to be charming and humorous. He was a likeable guy, on camera.
There were however, rumors of Dawson’s disappointing behavior. Author David Baber mentioned in his book, Television Game Show Hosts, that Dawson’s ego grew alongside the popularity of the show. On several occasions, Dawson had clashes with the producers because of different reasons. From arguing that the contestants’ answers were correct, telling lengthy stories that would take-up screen time, to arguing which jokes needed to be edited out. There was even an instance when he forbade a producer from coming on the set and Dawson hired someone on his own.
