Croatia declared independence from Yugoslavia on the 25th of June in 1991 and now celebrate that day as “Statehood Day,” so don’t make the mistake of calling Croatia Yugoslavia or referring to a Croatian as Yugoslavian. After enduring centuries fighting for their freedom and identity, Croatians will not appreciate this social blunder. Decades after the war, Croatia is recognized as an independent country with a strong economy and a stable government. Despite the presence of regional diversity in the country, Croatians seek respect and acknowledgement as a culture distinct from Yugoslavia’s customs and traditions. Croatians would rather have their culture identified and more closely linked with Austrians than with the beliefs and principles of Yugoslavians.
