Don’t Expect Speedy Public Transportation

While Croatia is not that big, with a territory covering only 21,851 square miles, it has a large continental area and an extensive stretch of coastline. Unless you’re renting a car, you can get around the country on buses, trams, and trains, but try to book bus tickets ahead especially during the peak season. Some buses operate every day (vozi svaki dan) and some even travel overnight, but if you’re on a tight weekend schedule, make sure you don’t book tickets to a bus that does not operate on Sundays and holidays (vozi nedjeljom i blagdanom). Some local buses also serve as long-distance buses, stopping often to pick up passengers, so if you’re in a hurry, book a tourist bus that will take you directly to your destination. Moreover, even though some distances appear close when you look at the map, traveling by bus or tram might take longer than expected because of the mountainous terrain.
Trains are generally faster than buses and trams, but the country’s train network is limited, and delays that last hours are common. There are many ferries that connect the central land to surrounding islands, but it’s best to book your tickets online ahead of your travel date because it might be difficult to purchase tickets on the day itself especially during peak seasons, and this can again delay you from getting to places.
