Don’t Use Big Notes

Don’t use the shops or stalls to break a 1,000 Kuna bill into smaller units. You can’t buy an inexpensive item like a bottle of water, a pack of gum, or a bar of Dorina chocolate and expect the shop owner to have enough smaller bills and coins for change. Most of the shops in towns are small, family-owned businesses, and they tend to quickly run out of smaller bills with lower denominations especially during the peak season. So, try to make an effort and pay the busy vendor with an exact amount or at least a smaller banknote that’s closer to the price of the item.
One tip, when you’re exchanging your foreign currency at an ATM, is to withdraw an odd amount that’s not divisible by a hundred. Otherwise, you can go to a local bank to exchange large notes for smaller ones as well as coins.
