Don’t Mention The War With Serbia

Don’t bring up the war with Serbia because even though this happened in the 90s, and it isn’t particularly unique to Croatia since Bosnians and Muslims were among the 100,000 people who died in the horrific war, it’s still a painful subject to discuss. This is an extremely upsetting and sensitive topic for Croatians, particularly the older generation, so it’s more than a show of respect and common courtesy to steer clear of this subject. However, if the Croatians wish to share their experiences during the war, let them talk while you listen and stop yourself from interrupting with an opinion. If you insist to discuss the war because you find the matter exceedingly interesting, make sure you are well and accurately informed about the history and conflicts of and among the countries involved. Also, note that simultaneously raising your thumb, index finger, and middle finger is a gesture of Serbian nationalism, therefore avoid making this sign in front of a Croatian. You might accidentally make the gesture with your fingers when counting one to three.
