Aside from rakia, the colorless homemade fruit brandy that’s often made exclusively from grapes, Croatia offers a great selection of spirits, wine, and beer for tourists to try. The plavac, a favorite red wine, and the traminac, an aromatic white wine, go well with local meat and fish dishes. If you’re not into spirits and wine, you can try Karlovačko, a popular beer by a subsidiary of Heineken.

While you may see many Croatians drinking, you are unlikely to encounter any raucous drunken behavior from the locals. Getting drunk and loud, smashing bottles, and soiling the streets is frowned upon and considered offensive. So, don’t drink excessively if you cannot handle your liquor, or if you turn into a boisterous, ill-mannered carouser after a couple of bottles.
