Skip Eating And Drinking In The City Center

While you don’t want to skip trying as much of the local cuisine as you can, avoid eating at restaurants, bars, and cafes in any of the popular seaside towns like Dubrovnik, Hvar, and Zagreb. It’s great to explore and take pictures in these cities and islands, but they’re also very expensive. Coffee that you can buy in a small town will cost twice or thrice as much in key coastal destinations. You can expect the meals to be even more expensive in restaurants in Rovinj, Split, or Zadar, especially those with a seaside view. If you’re after the food, many of the restaurants outside the central area offer the same menus in major restaurants along coastal promenades—at a lower price. Moreover, eating at a fancy restaurant does not guarantee quality food. You might find better, homemade dishes in places outside prime locations.
Additionally, if you’re trying to stay within a budget during your trip, don’t buy your groceries in the city center or on an island. It will be more economical to purchase your goods from mainland supermarkets before you hop on a ferry to any of the islands.
