Don’t Assume Croatians Are Arguing When Conversing

Croatians tend to speak loudly, brusquely, and rather animatedly during conversations. However, this manner of speaking is their way of expressing their passion and not anger. To a tourist unaccustomed to their gruffness and energy, two Croatians who are just catching up might sound like they’re arguing. Croatians are also straightforward and don’t hesitate to express their opinions even when they disagree, but they do so in a tactful and diplomatic manner, and they often carefully choose their words. They also don’t have a problem interrupting another person, but they’ll usually cut in with their views in a polite manner. Moreover, Croatians inject a lot of humor in conversations, but their sense of humor is often dark, cynical, and ironic. Sometimes, it’s hard to tell if they’re being funny because they can deliver a joke without smiling or changing their expression from a serious topic to a much lighter one.
