Don’t think you will impress a German with your updated sense of current events by discussing the refugee topic. It is a touchy topic, and you don’t know if the person you are talking to supports the government issue with refugees or not. Whatever the case may be, it is not polite to discuss such. Particularly for small talk, which Germans don’t engage in. There are so many other things you can talk about without being intrusive, and appearing obnoxious. Use your common sense, avoid topics that are prying and nosy. Always be polite. Food is always a good topic if you don’t know what to talk about.
