Never Criticize Russians Or Their Government

Sure, you’ve read much about Russia and you’re well-informed about their grim history of serfdom and dictatorship. Don’t be eager to showcase your knowledge and share your opinions, especially if they won’t portray their leaders in a good light. The Russians might find your comments offensive and patronizing. While neutral conversations about communism are generally acceptable, Russians will not appreciate it if you mention past failures of the Soviet Union or if you criticize their government and politicians. Russians are patriotic, and even though they know that the government cannot adequately provide for all its citizens, they believe their government is doing its best for their nation. Likewise, don’t speak poorly about their culture, their superstitions, their people, and the food. Nothing’s more annoying for Russians than seeing tourists enjoy their food, drinks, museums, and landscapes then start complaining about the government.
