Sure, you might run into some Russians sitting on a bench in the park, drinking alcohol from a thermos or a fizzy drink bottle. You might even see some of them concealing a bottle of vodka in a paper bag while walking on the streets of Kazan. Unless you’re ready to pay a fine ranging from 500 rubles ($9) to 1,500 rubles ($26), it would be smart to keep the drinking at home or in licensed joints. It’s prohibited to drink in public places, namely streets, parks, playgrounds, courtyards, stairwells of apartment buildings, and public transport. However, you can purchase liquor from bars and restaurants and consume your drinks there as long as the establishment is open. Beer and other low-alcohol drinks are allowed in some cinemas and food courts in malls but only if bought from there. You can also be fined for carrying an open bottle of alcohol in a public place even if you’re not drinking it.
