Never Show Up Empty-Handed When Invited To Someone’s Home

When Russians invite guests over for dinner or a visit, know and appreciate that your host will prepare a sumptuous meal, cooking the best dishes that they don’t regularly cook for themselves. Show your gratitude by bringing something for your host. You can bring a bottle of wine, a cake, or a box of chocolates. You can bring a book or a toy if your host has children. You can even bring just a small chocolate bar if you can’t find anything else. It doesn’t really matter what you bring; it’s the thought that counts. Flowers are also wonderful gifts, but make sure the bouquet has an odd number of flowers because you only present an even number at funerals. You might want to avoid giving yellow flowers, too, because Russians consider them a bad omen.
