Never Let Women Carry Heavy Things

While some women pride themselves on their independence and show their ability to take care of themselves by carrying their own things and opening their own doors, this is not common in Russia. Chivalry hasn’t gone out of style among Russian men. If you’re a strong, independent woman traveling to Russia, don’t be offended by these good-mannered gestures. Allow a man to carry your heavy luggage, hold a door open for you, pull your chair out at a restaurant, or offer you a seat on the train. These actions are all well-intentioned and in no way imply that you cannot take care of yourself. Russian men are genuinely just offering to help without any ulterior motive. When you return home, you’re welcome to demonstrate self-sufficiency by carrying a dozen heavy grocery bags by yourself to your kitchen, but while in Russia, allow the men to help you out.
