Russia is an amazing tourist destination, welcoming over four million guests in 2018. However, the Russian police are known to stop any individual at any time to check documents. This is not done randomly; if you don’t look Russian, you will most likely be asked for your ID. So, never leave your hotel without your passport and visa, or you’ll find yourself way off your itinerary, headed to the police station instead of the State Hermitage Museum. If you don’t have your passport with you, expect to be taken into custody. Don’t panic, and don’t start trying to talk your way out of the situation in broken Russian. Instead, be polite with the police and let them do their job because they’ll just run a check on you to establish your identity. Unless you’ve committed a violation aside from not carrying your papers, the police will not hold you for more than three hours—three hours you could’ve spent admiring the beauty of Lake Baikal instead of the walls of a police station.
