A few years ago, you could smoke almost anywhere in Russia, ranking the country as having one of the highest smoking rates in the world. You can light a cigarette in airports, cafes, public transportation, restaurants, and hotels. However, the Russian government has started enforcing strict anti-smoking regulations to deal with the smoking epidemic which has become one of the biggest health threats. Now, you can only smoke in a “kurilka,” a room specifically designed for smoking, in your own car, or on the street as long as it’s not less than 15 meters away from the entrance of railway stations or metros. You also can’t smoke on a balcony unless you’re willing to pay your neighbors some compensation. The fine for smoking in non-smoking areas is also 500 rubles ($9) to 1,500 rubles ($26), which is the same penalty for drinking in public places.
