The state of Illinois makes it to 2019’s list of worst states to retire in because of its absurd real property taxes, which is almost three-times that of its neighbors. Not only that, Chicago’s home state adds surcharges on everything you buy, 11% of the prices to be exact. With all the taxes it levies, you would think that the state puts it to good use, but it doesn’t. Illinois has some of the worst road networks in the United States, not to mention the worst drivers too.
Winters are also brutal in Illinois. The bitter cold can last for months in the Prairie State, making it a miserable place to live in, especially if you’re a senior. Fortunately, your Social Security and 401(k) is tax exempt, which might change your mind about skipping it as a retirement destination.
If you’re able to survive the deep-freeze, there may be some other things to be thankful for, such as its picturesque lakes and its vibrant wine scene.
And did we mention that it gets cold there?
