Massachusetts appears on this list of the worst states to retire in because of its high cost of living. It ranks among the top 10 states in the country with the most expensive living and healthcare costs. Bankrate ranks Massachusetts 43rd among all states for its high living costs.
While seniors there take home a relatively decent income, the state’s incredibly high tax rates practically eat up a big part of it. Luckily, Social Security benefits don’t get levied, but that’s about it as far as tax breaks are concerned.
Massachusetts’ low fiscal wellness, the 3rd worst in the country according to Mercatus Center at George Mason University, is to blame for the bad tax situation in the state, and is likely the reason why retirees are charged taxes there.
