Known as the Palmetto State, South Carolina boasts of mild weather, laid-back lifestyle, and southern charm. It also has a relatively low cost of living, which is made better by the state’s friendly tax laws on income and Social Security benefits. Property taxes are low, and inheritances and estates are tax exempt as well. So why is it in this list you say?
Unfortunately, South Carolina has one of the highest crime rates in the country, earning it 45th place in Bankrate’s ranking of the best and worst states to retire in. Not only that, it also has the worst senior wellness scores, and is placed dead-last in the same ranking by Bankrate.
