Alaska’s unrivaled natural beauty and picturesque vistas may sound like it’s the perfect place to retire. You may be right, considering that the state doesn’t charge its residents state or income tax. Cool huh? But before you pack your bags and leave, sit down and read on ‘coz Alaska really isn’t as retirement friendly as it seems to be.
In case you didn’t know, Alaska gets COLD. REALLY COLD. And not only that, Alaskan days can be weird too. During winter, some parts of the state (Barrow, Alaska) go dark for a little more than 2 months, 67 days more or less. Other parts (Juneau, Alaska) get only as much as 6 hours of daylight per day during winter. Weird huh? But that’s only during winter. Summers, on the other hand, see days where the sun is out ‘til midnight!
Crime is a problem too, with the state’s violent and property crime rate growing these past few years, according to Alaska’s Department of Public Safety.
The comforts of living in a tax-free state isn’t exactly felt in Alaska because the prices of things there can be quite high. Alaska’s cost of living exceeds that of the US average by a whopping 32%!
