Louisiana: Ranked #4

KSLA

There are many things that make Louisiana great. Its laid-back, southern charm, amplified by its lovely residents, make it one of the best places in America to visit. On top of that, one can experience the state’s very rich culture without breaking the bank. Louisiana’s being a hotbed for great cuisine and soulful grass-roots music, doesn’t make living there expensive. In fact, the state’s living costs is well under the national median.
So why IS Louisiana on this list of the worst states to retire in? Utilities, peace and order, quality of healthcare and taxes.
Louisiana was once known for having cheap electricity, but lately, an up-tick in utility costs have made living there quite a bit of a challenge. It is estimated that the cost of electricity in the state will keep on rising, with figures suggesting that it could rise by as much as 40% in the next 10 years.
The state also rates poorly on taxes, with levies on the purchase of goods as high as 11.5%. Louisiana’s quality of healthcare isn’t the best either, something that retirees consider seriously.
Crime is also one of the state’s problems, with violent crime rates among the worst in the whole of the US.
