Arizona: Ranked #20, (Tied with Georgia)

While the Grand Canyon state’s sunny, warm (hot actually), and beautiful vistas make it a favorite vacation destination, it generally isn’t a great place to settle-in after retirement, but that doesn’t make it the worst. Arizona’s average household income for seniors falls under the national average by 10.8%. When coupled with the slightly higher than average cost of living, plus the average sales tax of 8.25% the state charges, Arizona doesn’t sound economical for living on your nest egg.
However, if you really like the weather, and love Arizona’s natural beauty, there are some cities in the state that you might want to consider. Phoenix, for example, offers low living-costs, averaging around 5% below the median. It also doesn’t charge sales tax on basic stuff you purchase at the grocery.
