Mississippi’s affordability and low taxes make it one of the states that retirees consider when looking for a place to relocate to. Social Security benefits, including retirement income are exempted from tax, making it one of the tax-friendliest states in the country. Another enticing come-on that Mississippi has is its low property taxes. With all that said, why does it still appear on this list?
The reason lies in the poor state of senior health there. According to the United Health Foundation, Mississippi ranks 50th among all the states with the worst senior health. It also has the most number of poor people aged over 65, a staggering 4.1% higher than the national average.
Culturally, Mississippi gets 2nd to the last place, according to Bankrate’s ranking of the best and worst states to retire in.
