The biographical drama film, Frida, would have been a wonderful experience for Salma Hayek. Since she wanted to represent Frida Kahlo, the Mexican muralist, without any stereotypes. Hayek even wrote in the New York Times that, ” My greatest ambition was to tell her story.”
Unfortunately for Hayek, she was making the movie for Harvey Weinstein. Weinstein is now known as a disgraced movie mogul. He has been accused by 87 women of sexual harassment. According to Salma Hayek, Weinstein consistently made lewd requests such as: to shower with him, to give him a message, insisted that she have sex with him, and many other inappropriate and sexual requests. She kept refusing him, and this purportedly upset Weinstein. Weinstein even threatened to shut down filming unless Hayek did an explicit scene in Frida. Hayek remembered shaking, crying, and vomiting at the idea of finally giving in to Weinstein’s sick demands.
The film ultimately won two Oscars, Academy Awards for Best Makeup and Best Original Score. Sadly, filming it have Salma Hayek a nervous breakdown.
