Lily Tomlin as ‘Violet Newstead’, in “9 to 5”

If you like watching cult classics, you would be familiar with the movie 9 to 5. Originally, Lily Tomlin, a well-known comedian at the time, wasn’t supposed to be part of the movie. She mentioned to People that, “I didn’t want to do a cheap comedy,” and “I was looking for something more serious.” She eventually joined the cast after Jane Fonda, who co-produced the movie, spent the better part of a year requesting for Tomlin to come on board.
Even after she joined, she was still unsure about being part of the movie. When she was able to watch a short clip of her performance where she was supposed to be interacting with cartoon birds (these would have been added post production), she thought she was awful in it. She informed the producer, and offered to give her salary back, and pleaded to be let go. This didn’t happen though. Since later on, Tomlin saw more of the material for the other scenes, she realized that she was actually quite good in the movie.
